Asha Potdar, Born on 21 August 1939 in Bangalore in Potdar
Family of Karanataka. Her Father was a film Distributor in
Banagalore. She used to live at her Maushi’s ( Mother’s Sister)
Home, as her Maushi was not having any child.
In 1950, she came to Mumbai for her higher education, along
with her studies she was fond of dancing and thus, she started
learning dance from Shri. Parvatikumar Chandrshekhar Pille
and was trained Dancer. For her dancing she was highly
celebrated and got chance to perform in many National and
International Stage shows. She starred in a marathi Drama
‘Ammaldar’, during her college days. This drama was directed
by Shri. Ramakant Deshpande, who was brother of renowned
marathi writter, lyricist and actor, Shri. P. L Deshpande, a
multifaceted Personality. The rising fame of the drama arouses a
thirst for Acting in her mind. And she also started acting in many
dramas and films.
She entered the Marathi Proffesional Drama via Shri. Aatmaram
Bhende’s ‘ Naro Va Kunjaro’.
Followed by this ‘ Zopi Gelela Jaga Zala’,
‘ Dinuchya Sasubai Radhabai’ etc were some of her renowned
marathi plays.
In 1971, she got a golden opportunity to work with great
Dramatist Shri. Nanasaheb Fatak, in moving stage drama ‘Mate
Tula Kay Havay’ which was the translation of Shri Ravindranath
Tagore’s ‘Visarjan’ Play. She got the real fame and name with the
grand success of this play. She got introduced as a Marathi Actress
opposite to Shri. Ramesh Dev in marathi Film ‘ Prem Andhal Asta’.
Producer Shri N. B. Kamat gave her this opportunity,
when he was producing this film after success of his previous film
‘Umaj Padel Tar’. Shri Kamat was in search of a new face to
introduce in his next movie and he got very much impressed by
Asha Potdar’s acting manifestation in her dramas. This debut film of
Asha Potdar was released in year 1962. And with god’s grace she
got the Best Actress Award for her very fisrt film.
She had received many awards for her films like ‘ Swapn Tech
Lochani’ ‘Donhi Gharcha Pahuna’ ,‘ Devakinandan Gopala’,
‘Vavatal’. She starred in many hindi films like ‘ Manchali’.
She was also seen in leading role in many Marathi Hindi
films and daily soaps (serials)

The Government of India had honored Potdar with the title Mahamahopadhyaya in 1946, and Padmabhushan in 1967. Because of his vast knowledge, he was sometimes called as Dr. Johnson of Maharashtra or a living encyclopedia.
Potdar was a disciple of Itihasacharya Rajwade, and a trustee of Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal in Pune. His disciples included Swami Swaroopanand, Setu Madhavrao Pagadi, and R. C. Dhere. (T. S. Shejwalkar, Babasaheb Purandare, G. H. Khare, N. R. Phatak, and A. K. Priyolkar are some other prominent Marathi historians from Maharashtra.)

Born in the Sarpotdar family in the village of Birwadi in Raigad District of Maharashtra, Potdar completed his matriculation in 1906 from Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya in Pune, and four years later received a Bachelor’s degree in History and Marathi from Fergusson College (University of Pune), also in Pune.
During 1912 – 1920, he taught at, and later served as the Head Master of Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya. During 1921 – 1935, he served as a professor at New Poona College (later renamed S. P. College) in Pune.
Potdar had mastered Sanskrit to the extent that he could fluently converse in it.
In 1910, Sardar Mehendale, V. K. Rajwade, and Potdar founded Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal. Since then, Potdar maintained passionate interest through his life in the growth of the Mandal.
He traveled all over India, collecting historical documents pertaining especially to Maratha empire and Marathi literature. He ran periodicals, delivered speeches, and organized lecture series, inspiring others to research historical papers.
In 1965, the Government of Maharashtra appointed Potdar to write the biography of Shivaji, but before he could finish the assignment, he died on 6 October 1979 in Pune.
